Choosing a control platform is the single most consequential technology decision in a home — it outlives the TVs, the speakers, and usually the remodel. Get it right and every light, shade, speaker, camera, and thermostat answers to one interface for a decade or more. Get it wrong and you inherit the most expensive kind of frustration: a system your family fights with daily and no integrator wants to service.

We've programmed, installed, serviced, and rescued every platform on this page across Santa Barbara and Montecito — the ones we sell and the ones we've taken over from other integrators. This is the comparison we wish every client read before their walls closed: honest about strengths, honest about weaknesses, and honest about cost.

How to actually judge a control platform

Marketing brochures all promise the same magic. The real differences show up on five axes:

• Architecture & reliability — does it run on dedicated, commercial-grade processors, or lean on consumer hardware and the cloud? What happens when the internet drops?
• Depth of integration — how deeply does it control lighting, shading, HVAC, security, pools, gates, and audio — not just 'does it connect' but how fine-grained is the control?
• Interface & family-friendliness — will your houseguests figure it out? Do the keypads, remotes, touch panels, and app feel like one product?
• Scalability — can it grow from a media room to a 40-zone estate with guest house and grounds without hitting a ceiling?
• Longevity & serviceability — will the manufacturer, and a local dealer, still be behind it in ten years? Is your programming documented and portable?

The rankings

Here's where each platform lands for the projects we see on the South Coast — luxury homes and estates where design, reliability, and long-term stewardship matter. Your priorities may reorder the middle of this list; the top of it is hard to argue with.

Crestron — the gold standard

Crestron is the platform the others measure themselves against. It runs the boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies, the control rooms of stadiums, and the finest estates in the world — the same engineering, scaled to a home. Everything is purpose-built: dedicated processors, excellent native lighting and shading that blends seamlessly with Lutron (we design the two together on estates all the time), native audio-video distribution over the network (NVX), and keypads and touch panels finished like jewelry.

There are two ways to own Crestron. Crestron Home is the modern, configuration-based platform — beautiful out of the box, quick to deploy, and perfect for most luxury homes. Full custom Crestron is programmed from the ground up for estates and complex properties where nothing off-the-shelf will do: guest houses, vineyard grounds, theater rooms, staff interfaces, whatever the property demands. No other platform on this page offers that second gear at all.

• Strengths: commercial-grade reliability, limitless customization, best-in-class lighting/shading/AV distribution under one roof, decades-long product support, holds value at resale.
• Considerations: premium cost, and quality depends on the dealer — Crestron done badly is the source of half our takeover calls. Hire a certified team with in-house programmers (that's us).
• The bottom line: if the budget allows and the home deserves it, nothing else touches Crestron. It's what we run in our own spaces.

Control4 — the versatile workhorse

Control4 owns the broad middle of the smart-home market for good reason: it integrates with more third-party devices than anyone (13,000+ and counting), its interface is genuinely family-friendly, and its price-to-capability ratio is unmatched. A Control4 home gets one app, handsome keypads, excellent AV control with the industry's best universal remotes, and automation that simply works day after day.

Where Crestron is engineered like commercial infrastructure, Control4 is productized — which cuts both ways. Deployment is faster and more affordable, but deep customization has a ceiling, and some advanced functions lean on the dealer's driver library. For most homes short of a full estate, that trade is worth making. We position Control4 exactly where it belongs: the smart choice when you want real, whole-home automation without estate-level investment.

• Strengths: enormous device compatibility, intuitive interface, strong AV and media control, excellent value, huge dealer network.
• Considerations: customization ceiling below Crestron's; premium lighting/shading usually pairs it with Lutron (which we design in-house).
• The bottom line: the best all-around platform for beautifully automated homes that don't need estate-level customization.

Savant — the design-forward alternative

Savant built its reputation on the best-looking interface in the industry — an app so intuitive it feels like Apple designed it (no accident: Savant's roots are deeply Mac-based). Scene creation is genuinely user-editable, the whole experience is photography-driven and elegant, and since acquiring GE Lighting, Savant has added real depth in lighting and energy management, including battery and load management that none of the others handle as natively.

We rank it third not because it's weak — it's excellent — but because its dealer ecosystem and third-party integration breadth trail Control4, and its ceiling for full-custom estate work trails Crestron. For the right client — design-obsessed, Apple-household, interested in energy — Savant is a joy, and we're proud to rep it.

• Strengths: the industry's most elegant user experience, user-editable scenes, genuine energy/power management story, strong whole-home audio heritage.
• Considerations: smaller integration ecosystem than Control4, fewer local dealers, top-end custom work below Crestron's ceiling.
• The bottom line: the aesthete's platform — and the strongest energy-management play of the three majors.

RTI — the remote-control specialist

RTI comes from the universal-remote world, and it shows — in a good way for media rooms, and in a limiting way for whole homes. Its handheld remotes and touch panels are excellent, its dealer programming tools are flexible, and for an AV-centric project — a theater, a media room, a sports bar — it delivers real control at a sensible price. But its lighting, shading, and comfort integrations are add-ons rather than a native ecosystem, and large multi-room projects accumulate complexity that the platform wasn't born to carry.

• Strengths: outstanding remotes, flexible programming, strong price-to-performance for AV control.
• Considerations: whole-home depth is limited; experience quality is almost entirely dealer-dependent.
• The bottom line: a fine tool for the right room; not what we'd build a home on.

URC — entertainment value

URC's Total Control platform covers the essentials — AV, some lighting, cameras, climate — at prices below Control4. In the hands of a meticulous dealer it can serve a straightforward home well. Our honest experience from takeovers: the gap between a good URC install and a frustrating one is wider than on any platform above it on this list, because so much of the experience is hand-built by the programmer. It's also the platform we most often replace when families outgrow it.

• Strengths: affordability, decent AV control, functional app.
• Considerations: inconsistent real-world experience, thinner premium ecosystem, limited estate scalability.
• The bottom line: budget-friendly entertainment control — with a ceiling you'll likely meet.

Elan and Nice — a platform in transition

Elan was once a genuine contender — a slick interface, strong security integration, and a loyal dealer base. Then its parent company was acquired by Nice, the Italian gate-and-shade automation giant, and Elan's identity has been folded into the broader Nice ecosystem. Nice brings real strengths (it's a global leader in gate, shade, and access automation), but the combined home-control platform is still finding its footing: product roadmaps have shifted, some legacy Elan hardware has reached end-of-life, and dealer confidence — ours included — is cautious.

If your home runs Elan today, it isn't an emergency — but it is a planning item. Parts and support windows are narrowing, and the smartest time to migrate a control system is on your schedule, not after a processor fails. We take over and stabilize Elan homes regularly, and we'll tell you honestly whether yours has years left or whether a migration to Crestron or Control4 should go on the calendar.

• Strengths: Nice's gate/shade/access pedigree is real; existing Elan interfaces remain pleasant to use.
• Considerations: platform transition risk, narrowing legacy support, thin local dealer bench.
• The bottom line: we service it and rescue it — we don't start new projects on it.

Lighting circuits, shade counts, audio zones, camera coverage, and the number of rooms drive the investment — the control brain is a fraction of it. • Building or renovating an estate, or you simply want the best: Crestron — full custom or Crestron Home depending on complexity. It's our flagship for a reason.
• A complete, polished smart home with the best value-to-capability ratio: Control4, usually paired with Lutron lighting.
• Design-first household, deep in the Apple ecosystem, or interested in energy storage and management: Savant.
• A dedicated media room or AV-focused project on a tighter budget: Control4 first; RTI or URC if the scope stays strictly entertainment.
• You already own Elan, URC, or RTI and it's misbehaving: don't rip it out on day one — have us audit it. Sometimes stabilization buys years; sometimes migration is the honest answer. You'll get the truth either way.
